Shiites accuse Army of bribing Islamic leaders

• Kaduna govt sets up panel to probe December clash
ISLAMIC Movement in Nigeria (IMN) also known as Shiites has alleged that the meeting between the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Mechanized Division, Major General Adeniyi Oyebade and its Islamic rival sects during which he offered them N500,000 to incite the other sects against the Shiites and to convince and justify last year’s violent clash between the Nigeria Army and the sect in Zaria.
However, the GOC, through the Public Relations Officer,(PRO), of the Mechanised Division, Col. Abdul Usman, who responded to the
allegation, confirmed that a meeting took place between Oyebade and some Islamic clerics last Thursday.
According to him, the money given to the religious leaders was not a
bribe, but to fuel their vehicles.
In a related development, Kaduna State Government has finally released the names of the members of the judicial panel to probe the clash.
The panel set up by Governor Nasir El-Rufai to investigate the violent clash in December was said to have been established under Section 2 of the Kaduna State Commission of Inquiry Law, 1991.
According to a press statement signed by the spokesman of the IMN, Mallam Ibrahim Musa and made available to journalists in Kaduna at the weekend, reads: “The Islamic Movement in Nigeria IMN is aware of a meeting organized on 14th January 2016 by the General Officer
Commanding 1 Mechanized Division Major General Adeniyi Oyebade, with members of some Islamic sects and some Muslim Chieftaincy title holders in Kaduna, where the GOC made all efforts to convince them of the justification of killing over 1000 members of the Islamic
Movement after which he gave them N500,000.
“The GOC carefully selected Wahabi sect scholars who have been our rivals and concocted lies , seeking their support to find ways to wipe out the Islamic Movement .
He told them the Army acted correctly and that he pleaded with the members of the movement to surrender for a cordon and search operation which the IMN resisted.
We wish to state here that as a Christian, the GOC himself is not safe from those religious bigots he is communing with to fight Shiites because of their of religious intolerance .
This could be supported with the statement made to the press after the meeting by Sheikh Zakzaky’s elder brother, Sani Yaqoub, who said the Shi’ites, Jews, and Christians are of the same ilk.
“The IMN needs not respond to the malice and concoctions in the GOC’s tale of the unfortunate killing spree he spearheaded because everything is now clear to the world that the attack was pre-planned and deliberate and no amount of fabrications could change that.”
“Hence, the Army’s claim that it has no issues with the IMN is
deceptive because the blood of 34 members of the movement was hanging on the Army already barely a year before it launched its second attack where it killed over 1000 unarmed members of the Movement, including innocent women and children.”
“More so, the GOC must have been out of touch with the recent events where the generality of people, both home and abroad have condemned the propaganda movie he showed to the scholars, created to demonize the IMN as a potential security threat as simply a way of seeking cover-up and justify the extra-judicial killings.”
The Army PRO’s statement denying the money given to the clerics was a bribe said: “I want to tell you that the GOC usually holds quarterly meeting with Islamic and traditional leaders in the state to brief them and hear from them about the need
for peace in the state.
“I know that he held a meeting on Thursday with some Islamic clerics and some traditional leaders. I don’t know from which sects they came from.
He took time to tell them about what happened in Zaria between the Shiite and the Nigeria Army. He showed them pictures and video clips. Some of them confessed that it was the first time they were
getting to hear the truth on the matter.”
“ For God’s sake they were 164 in attendance and they came from all over the state. Some came from quite far places. How can you gather people from such far places that you will not fuel their vehicles? How can N500,000 be shared among 164 people of such calibre amount to a bribe? You are not talking of N500 million. It is ridiculous”, he
Named as members of the panel which has as Chairman, the Presiding Judge of the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt, Justice Garba are Prof. Salihu Shehu, Prof. Umar Labdo , Malam Salihu Abubakar,Prof. Auwalu Yadudu , Prof. Ibrahim Gambari , Mr. Afakriya Gadzama, Brigadier-General Aminun-Kano Maude (rtd) and Dr. Jibrin Ibrahim .
