How Halloween Is Celebrated The ghouls and goblins
are coming to get you. Witches rule and wizards stroll. Scary
jack-o-lanterns sit outside doorways, adding to the festive charm. On
All Hallows' Eve, the theme is horror. For a change, everybody wants to
feel the icy cold chills from the supernatural world.
Each year on October 31, the day before All Saints' Day, the world wakes up to celebrate Halloween.
Almost a month before Halloween, kids and adults get busy planning for the celebration.
Costume parties are quite common, as you find kids and adults decking
up in bizarre attire. Some enthusiasts enjoy a bonfire party where
everyone shares a spooky tale and gets listeners quaking with fear.
Jean Baudrillard There
is nothing funny about Halloween. This sarcastic festival reflects,
rather, an infernal demand for revenge by children on the adult world.
Bertrand Russell Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin, more even than death.
James Matthew Barrie A house is never still in darkness
to those who listen intently; there is a whispering in distant
chambers, an unearthly hand presses the snib of the window, the latch
rises. Ghosts were created when the first man awoke in the night.

History of Halloween Though Halloween is said to have Pagan origins, it also has religious Christian connotations. Some Christian groups organize prayers, fasting and church services on Halloween night.
The origin of Halloween is often linked to the Celtic festival
of Samhain ("summer's end"). The Celts believed that they could
communicate with departed souls as they prepared for a cold winter.
People lit huge bonfires to ward off spirits.
Christian
beliefs about All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November
2) also influenced the observance of Halloween. Some believed that the
souls of the departed were at large until All Saints' Day. Halloween was
the spirits' last chance to wreak vengeance on their mortal enemies. Christians disguised themselves in costumes and masks for this reason.
Halloween: The Grand Costume Party Who are you going to be this year? Count Dracula? Spiderman? A zombie? Maybe even Morticia Adams from the Addams Family? Halloween is a great time to have some fun. Put on your thinking cap, and come up with some creative costume ideas.
Halloween costume parties bring out the best out of people; this is your chance to showcase your creativity.
Chris Rock Charlie Brown is the one person I identify with. C.B. is such a loser. He wasn't even the star of his own Halloween special.
Gwen Stefani Being in a band you can wear whatever you want - it's like an excuse for Halloween everyday.
R. L. Stine When I was a kid my family
was really poor and I remember one Halloween I wanted to dress up
really scary and my parents came home with a duck costume. I wore that
costume for years! I hated it.
Themes for Halloween Parties If
it were not for the plethora of Halloween costume parties, most people
would not even step out of their homes. However, the numerous invites to
the coolest Halloween parties in town are enough to get even the
laziest couch potato off his sofa. American actor Eddie Kaye Thomas, who was born on 31 October, once quipped, "Being born on Halloween, there's always a party. It's a convenient birthday because you don't really have to organize a party."
Themes
from classic horror films add to the celebration. The decor includes
bats, jack-o-lanterns, vampires, and witches -- all of them grinning
ghoulishly at you. Cool Halloween sayings
set the mood for the evening. The fruit punch is blood red. I have even
seen mozzarella canapes that look like eyeballs. Some of the dishes may
activate your gag reflex. But they are sure to pique your sense of
humor, if you have a strong stomach.
How Kids Celebrate Halloween Not everyone hits the party scene on All Hallows' Eve. Parents, for instance, are left running after their children.
The thought of dressing up as their favorite cartoon, or most feared
villain makes children look forward eagerly to the annual festival.
Enjoy Halloween with your kids. Celebrating Halloween with kids
will not just be a fun experience, but also a great way to bond with
them. And if your children want to see you in a costume, be a sport.
Wear devil's horns on your head or a pirate eye patch to keep them happy. Relive your own childhood this All Hallows' Eve.
Matthew Broderick My
son wants to be Batman and he wants the Batman costume that comes in
the mail. It has fake muscles in it, which is very disconcerting on a
four-year-old.
Joel McHale I
loved New Jersey. I thought it was the greatest place in the world
because on Halloween kids could start trick or treating right after
school. Isn't that great?
Jack Prelutsky, The Troll, Nightmares - Poems to Trouble Your Sleep His
blood is black and boiling hot, he gurgles ghastly groans. He'll cook
you in his dinner pot, your skin, your flesh, your bones.
Jack Prelutsky, Nightmares Poems to Trouble Your Sleep She comes by night, in fearsome flight, in garments black as pitch, the queen of doom upon her broom, the wild and wicked witch.
Trick-or-Treat: Keep Your Candies Handy A well-known Halloween quotation
by Robert Brault highlights the stresses that adults face on Halloween.
Brault said, "I don't know that there are real ghosts and goblins, but
there are always more trick-or-treaters than neighborhood kids." Ask
children what they like most about trick-or-treating, and they will
probably echo the words of short story writer Steve Almond, "Nothing on
Earth so beautiful as the final haul on Halloween night." Trick-or-treat
is not just a cultural experience, it is a game that kids and adults
play to win.
Make sure that you stock up on Halloween-themed
candy before the trick-or-treaters come knocking at your door. If you
don't want the pranksters to trick you, keep the candy in candy pots
outside your door.
Movies Add to the Magic of Halloween Catch
up with the latest horror movies on All Hallows' Eve on TV. The
scarier, the better. Enjoy hair-raising horror flicks like The Shining, John Carpenter's Halloween, The Ring or that eternal classic, The Exorcist. Some of the dialogues are enough to set your spine tingling. One of my favorites is spoken by Mrs. Mills in The Others, "Sometimes the world of the living gets mixed up with the world of the dead." Read some spooky Halloween movie quotes.
If the Halloween mood is too morbid for you, lighten up with some funny Halloween sayings. Here is a funny quote made by famous American writer Kurt Vonnegut: "Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand."
Shaggy, Scooby-Doo Hold on, man. We don't go anywhere with "scary," "spooky," "haunted," or "forbidden" in the title.
James Ferguson Auld Daddy Darkness creeps frae his hole, Black as a blackamoor, blin' as a mole....
Linus Van Pelt, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin.
Lindsay Lohan Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.
Lauren Springer Sadly,
Halloween, with our good-natured attempts to protect the little ones,
from the increasingly dangerous traffic and the increasingly sick
adults, has become and utter bore.
Dennis Yost and the Classics IV Just like a ghost, you've been a-hauntin' my dreams, So I'll propose... on Halloween. Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you.
Loretta Lynn We used to go around tipping outhouses over, or turning over corn shocks on Halloween.
Lindsey Wallace,Halloween Trick or Treat. Smell my feet. Give me something good to eat. If you don't, I don't care. I'll pull down Annie's underwear!
