Samsung is planning to invest up to $7.47 billion in order to supply Apple with flexible OLED panels for future generation iPhones, reports ETNews. A contract with Apple has 'practically' been decided in which Samsung will supply most of Apple's panel demand.
Samsung Display has decided on the size of investment to extend current facilities with Apple and will receive orders from Apple starting from end of 1st quarter at the earliest. It is heard that size of investments this year will be at least 30,000 sheets per month to 45,000 sheets per month. A plan to invest additional 45,000 sheets per month in 2017 is also included in this contract.
The contract apparently indicates that Samsung will invest between $2.49 billion and $3.32 billion in plant and equipment this year. If 45,000 sheets are added in 2017, it will increase that investment to $6.64 to $7.47 billion.
Samsung is also looking to expand production for the Galaxy and other smartphone manufacturers. This could increase investment by more than $830 million this year.
There have been numerous reports of late predicting that Apple will switch to OLED displays. At the end of December it was reported that both Samsung and LG were near an agreement with Apple to become suppliers.
