Nigeria no longer a football powerhouse —Okocha

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Okocha, has lamented   the declining standards   of Nigerian football, insisting the country can no longer be considered a football powerhouse.
Okocha, who was speaking on the poor performance of the Flying Eagles and the Super Falcons at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup respectively, told reporters in Lagos on Saturday that the country should develop the sport at the grassroots.
He said, “We should first of all accept the fact that we are struggling at the moment. We need to sacrifice a few years and maybe go back to the grassroots and start from there. I don’t think we will benefit from being stubborn about it, claiming that we are still what we used to be.
“We are paying the price for failing to invest in the grassroots. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. We just need to speak to ourselves and accept that we are no longer the football powerhouse that we used to be. We should   put things in order.”
The former Bolton Wanderers midfielder said the country’s football had been suffering partly because the football authorities had neglected knowledgeable and experienced ex-internationals.
Okocha said, “It’s all about getting us involved. Showing interest and showing respect to some of us. If I may be a bit brutal, I think we are being neglected. As long as we don’t appreciate what we’ve got, we will keep suffering. Except we want to go out there and get foreigners. If we want our people, we should get the right people.”
The Chairman of the Delta State FA added, “There is no need for me to think I know it all. I’ve started from where it is hot, which is the state FA. I’m sacrificing my time and ideas to try and put things in order in the Delta State FA and see if I can grow from there – and maybe one day I can head the technical committee at the national level.

REVEALED! Bobbi Kristina’s Boyfriend punched out her tooth and dragged her hair before she was found unconscious

Bobbi was found unconscious in a bathtub in January – nearly three years after her mother Whitney Houston was discovered dead in a bath.Nick Gordon ‘punched out Bobbi’s tooth and dragged her by her hair because she was leaving him’ before she was found unconscious, lawsuit claims as she is moved to a
hospice to ‘die naturally’ Bobbi Kristina Brown has been taken off life support and is now being cared for in a hospice.
Pat Houston, the aunt of the 22-year-old, said the condition of Whitney Houston’s daughter has ‘continued to deteriorate’.
A statement on behalf of the Houston family thanked ‘everyone for their support and prayers’ before adding: ‘She is in God’s hands now.’
At the same time, Nick Gordon has been hit with a lawsuit from Bedelia Hargrove, her court-appointed conservator, claiming he was physically abusive on multiple occasions and stole from Bobbi while she was in a coma.
Most shocking however is a claim that Bobbi was set to meet with a friend and reveal her problems with Gordon around the same time she was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub on January 31 at her suburban Atlanta home.
Gordon responded to the news that Bobbi was off life support on Twitter, writing; ‘We keep praying, she has fought hard this long don’t give up hope.’

ISIS publicly flog two men for privately breaking their Ramadan fast

Savage jihadis fighting for the Islamic State in Iraq have publicly flogged two men who were accused of secretly breaking the Ramadan fast and lying about their ‘crime’.
Photographs released by ISIS’ Information Office of the State of the Island – believed to refer to Samarra on the eastern banks of the Tibris river, show the men being punished in a desert clearing.
A young terror commander is seen reading out the charges against the two prisoners, while a huge crowd of bloodthirsty locals – including young boys no older than six, some of whom wear Western football shirts – struggle to get a better view of the brutal punishment.
The images begin by showing two terrified-looking men crouching in front of a group of ISIS commanders, one of whom carries a large whip.
Pick-up trucks daubed with pro-ISIS slogans surround the men, suggesting they were arrested by the terror group’s religious police force, known as the Hisbah.
While a young commander reads the charges against the condemned men, several boys can be seen poking their heads from behind the vehicles to get a better view of the victims being flogged.

Most dangerous drugs circulated in the country are produced in Anambra –NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has declared that the most dangerous drugs circulated in the country are produced in Anambra State.The state NDLEA Commander, Mr. Sule Momodu, who made the declaration on Saturday at the Women’s Development Centre in Awka to mark the 2015 United Nations
Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking, identified one of the dangerous drugs produced in the state as methamphetamine Momodu expressed worry over the increasing production of illicit drugs, abuse and trafficking in the state and called for a concerted effort to stop the development.
He disclosed that the anti-drug abuse and trafficking agency arrested at least 122 drug suspects between January and June this year. While 114 of them were men, eight were women.
A total of 110.624kg of illicit drug, he said, was seized during the period under review with cannabis sativa known as marijuana topping with 107.26kg.
Other seizures were cocaine, 138.2 grammes, heroine, 100.54grammes, liquid methamphetamine 2.615kg and solid methamphetamine 510 grammes.
The NDLEA commander said the agency also arraigned 22 suspects during the period, out of which eight convictions were obtained while 28 fresh cases were filed.
He expressed optimism that the agency would fight drug abuse and trafficking in the state, asking stakeholders to join hands in the campaign against drug abuse.
He lauded the state Governor, Willie Obiano, for the support he had given to the agency, especially involving it in the State Security Council and the approval of a parcel of land in Awka, the state capital, for the building of the agency’s rehabilitation centre.Momodu warned that if the war against illicit drug use and trafficking “is not won now, the scourge will take over the society soonest.”
Momodu, however, called for the inauguration of the state Drug Control Committee to help drive national drug control plans and objectives.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jesophat Akabuike, who represented the governor at the event, restated the state’s commitment to the fight against crime in the state, including drug abuse and trafficking.

Abidal: I want to deliver the next Messi at Barcelona

The former Barcelona defender announced he will rejuvenate La Masia as part of the team backing Joan Laporta’s bid to return as president Eric Abidal has announced he will become Barcelona‘s sporting director if former chief Joan Laporta wins the club’s upcoming presidential elections, claiming he wants to find
the next Lionel Messi. The retired defender represented the Catalans for six years, winning four La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies before leaving when his contract expired under ex-president Sandro Rosell.
However, the 35-year-old has now announced his desire to return to Camp Nou in a directorial role as part of Laporta’s team and hopes to bring new stars through Barca’s famed La Masia youth system.
“For me it is an honour to be here next to Joan,” Abidal told reporters alongside the man who brought him to the club as a player. “I wanted to continue working here and for many years I thought about what I could do.
“We want to start a new project and find new players in La Masia, players like Leo Messi, Xavi Hernandez or Andres Iniesta. The club is the club of fans and they are in charge.
“I have been fortunate to be here on a personal and professional level. I’m very excited about this project. Barcelona is more than a club. Visca Barca and Visca Catalunya.”
Laporta spoke as well, stating his determination to return the outfit to the principles of Barcelona legend Johan Cryuff and focus on delivering first-team prospects from the youth ranks again.
“Cruyff changed the philosophy of the club, created a winning mentality and that philosophy created a style that is admired throughout the world,” the lawyer, who led the club between 2003 and 2010, stated.
“This philosophy has led us to win all the titles we could win.  You cannot defend this model if the person who inspired you is out. Therefore, I will speak with Cruyff.
“La Masia is a question of identity. We have to teach the culture of effort and teamwork. We want to base the foundations for the new Barca. We want La Masia to work well again. Seeing how many La Masia players have reached the first team pushes us to bet on this basis.
“Enrique defends Barca’s style and the philosophy of the club. The times evolve and Enrique has evolved the system. Now we also have other [tactical] variants. It is an honour for us and we think it is fair for Enrique to continue.”
Laporta also declared his intention to replace current shirt sponsors Qatar Foundation with Unicef’s logo again, concluding: “We are in favour of Unicef, other presidential rivals are the ones who like Qatar.
“The values of freedom and democracy that transmits Catalunya are ours. They are neither better nor worse than yours, but it’s not good to link the image of the club to another country.”
The election to decide who runs Camp Nou concludes on July 18, with Josep Maria Bartomeu, Agusti Benedito and Jordi Majo also among the candidates to run the club.

How Nigeria can win World Cup – Adegboye Onigbinde

A former FIFA/CAF Instructor, Adegboye Onigbinde, says the panacea for Nigeria’s declining performance at the World Cup will be the establishment of a functional football developmental programme.
Onigbinde said in Ibadan yesterday that most players presently in the national teams were relatively unknown because they did not emerge from discernible football developmental programmes. “Up to date, I have not come across a meaningful and functional developmental programmes for football in this country. All I have seen out there are pretences.According to him, Nigeria have many young talented players who can be well-groomed under the right atmosphere and functional development programmes, capable of propelling them to win the World Cup.
“We can only get it right when we sit down and think of a programmes to always fall back on,” he said.
The former Green Eagles’ coach chided Nigerians for blaming the coaches and players for the flop by the Flying Eagles and the Falcons.
Both teams were ousted from at the group stages of World Cups in New Zealand and Canada.
“We are unfair to these people because they are victims of a societal problem and failure at developing football in the right way,” he said.
Onigbinde, who did his first coaching course in 1961, said he had written several papers on how to develop football in the country, with the first in 1965.
“I wrote a paper in 1965 on how to develop football in Nigeria, which was about 50 years ago. And since then, I have never stopped talking, granting interviews or presenting papers but nothing seems to have changed,” he said.
According to him, the development of sports in the country will contribute immensely toward the nation’s growth.
He said with the development of sports in the country, youth restiveness and social vices would be reduced to the barest minimum.
Onigbinde said that crimes in the country were juvenile-centered, and when youths were positively engaged in sports, the rate of crime would reduce.

Official: Liverpool sign Roberto Firmino

The Brazil international moves to Anfield for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of €40 million, with the future of fellow attacker Raheem Sterling uncertain
Liverpool have completed the signing of Hoffenheim‘s Brazilian attacker Roberto Firmino for an undisclosed fee, subject to a medical.
Reds’ chief executive Ian Ayre flew out to Chile – where Firmino currently is for the Copa America – to wrap up a deal worth €40 million, with €30m paid to the Bundesliga club up front and a potential €10m in add-ons.
The 23-year-old will complete a medical after the conclusion of the tournament and has penned terms on a long-term contract at Anfield.Firmino has also attracted interest from Manchester United, having scored 10 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions last season, but has now opted to join Brendan Rodgers’ side.
The attacking midfielder, who can also play as a striker, has spent four years with Hoffenheim and made his international debut in November 2014 after impressing in the Bundesliga.
Liverpool’s acquisition of Firmino may have been accelerated by Manchester City’s interest in Raheem Sterling, with the Premier League giants looking to buy the 20-year-old this summer.
City are set to make a final €63m offer for Sterling – who has told Liverpool he wants to leave – in the coming days, and Firmino may indeed have been acquired as a replacement ahead of the England international’s proposed departure.

Gradually, the truth about some certain personalities in Nollywood is gradually being let out of the bags as word of words have continued to trail two actresses in the Yoruba genre.
Recently, one of the most alleged kept secret about actress, Wura Gold, was spilt out by angry actress, Biodun Okeowo, when she updated her status on her phone application pointing accusing fingers on her long time friend of being a lesbian. When BON put a call through to get the real fact of what has been going on, Biodun stated that her long time friend, Wura Gold, had demanded her to be her bed mate which she refused and that paved way for her going about to spread false rumours about her.
According to her, “Wura Gold was my friend before and we were very good friend. But I started to give her space when I started realizing the kind of person she truly was. She told me she wants us to become lovers as in becoming Lesbian partners. I told her wasn’t interested… And that was it. Wura started going around calling me names. She spoils my name in front of everyone… Recentlyi when I went for ‘TESFIR’ Ramadan Lecture. Some people saw me and calling me friends with Wura Gold, I told them. She is not my friend. At least not any more. Liz Dasilva then decided to set in to resolve the cause of the quarrel between us. Liz then called myself and Wura on a conference and tried talking to us. When I opened up to Liz on the reason Wura is fighting me, Wura started to curse me and my children. That was what prompted my BBM update.”
When a call was put through also to get a clearer view on the lingering crisis from Wura Gold, the hands of the clock was turned back as she accused Biodun Okeowo, as the guilty person who has been making sexual advances to her.
“on the contrary it was Biodun Okeowo that asked me to become her lover and I turned her down. Why would she turn things, people are so funny. You can go ahead and ask the likes of Anita Julius and Liz DaSilva at least they have slept in my house, if there was ever anytime I made such silly advances at any of them,” she said.

Rev Olatosho Oshoffa’s Family Rejects Him As New CCC Unification Leader

Celestial Church Of Christ, CCC Leadership Crisis: Rev Olatosho Oshoffa’s Family Denounced Him As The New Leader.The leadership issue facing the CCC (Celestial Church Of Christ) has reached another stage as the family of Olatosho Oshoffa has rejected him as the new Unification leader of the church
Last week, Olatosho Oshoffa declared himself as the new leader after a vision he said he received from God. He made this known during a news conference in Lagos saying that the leadership of the church supported his move.
But at a new conference at the weekend in Ketu, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, members of the Oshoffa family said the declaration of Olatosho as the new leader of the church is an act of rebellion.
Spokesperson of the Oshoffa dynasty, Senior Evangelist Ebenezer Oshoffa said the family did not support Olatosho’s leadership of the church.
“The family has always avoided public interference in the affairs of the church, the Celestial Church of Christ founded by our dear father but it has become imperative and as a matter of urgency for us to speak out as a family because of the recent twist in the leadership tussle of the church which unfortunately is personal to us because our son and brother Senior Evangelist Olatosho Oshoffa is involved,” he said.
Contrary to his family claims, Olatosho said God has anointed him to united the Celestial church family. He further said that the leadership crisis is the work of satan.

Woman, grandchild killed during Lagos cult clash

One-year-old Opeyemi Yusuf was licking a lollipop, comfortably straddled to her grandma’s back en route to the market, when a bullet pierced through the back of their tricycle.
It hit Opeyemi in the head and penetrated to Mrs. Osayemi Victoria’s head, killing both victims on the spot.
Opeyemi was her mother’s only child, while the 57-year-old grandma was reportedly visiting when tragedy struck.
Information learnt that the tricycle they boarded ran into the middle of a gun battle between rival cult groups along Ishawo Road, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The incident, which happened on Tuesday, was said to have created confusion as residents ran helter-skelter.
The driver of the tricycle, Awoyemi Olaoluwa, said the single bullet pierced through the nylon back side of the tricycle and hit the duo who was in the middle.
The other two passengers, on the right and left, escaped unhurt.
Olaoluwa said, “I had picked Mama at Total bus stop. She was my second passenger and she was backing the child. I later picked another passenger along the road and she moved to the middle.
“I was heading towards the Agric bus stop along Ishawo Road. But when we got to Mechanic Village bus stop, I started hearing gunshots.
“My passengers asked me to hurry because there was a fight in the area. I was told the cultists were on motorcycles and were chasing and shooting at one another.
“We had not moved too far when I saw that the woman’s head was bowed and resting on my back seat.”
He said his clothes had also become soaked in blood.
The other passengers, who suddenly realised what had happened, were said to have raised the alarm.
“My passengers told me to stop. That was when I knew Mama and the child had been hit by a stray bullet,” he added.
The tricycle driver was said to have called for help as the other passengers alighted and mixed with a crowd of people that had formed around the scene.
Information learnt that instead of helping the victims, the people started using their camera phones to take snapshots of the woman and the baby, who still had the lollipop stuck to his mouth.
Policemen from the Owutu division were said to have been alerted to the scene.
Our correspondent gathered that the corpses were first taken to the police station before they were deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue.
Opeyemi’s mother, Bukola, a teacher, said she was supposed to be in the tricycle with her mother, because they had planned to go to the market together.
She said, “My mother came from Ekiti to Lagos. She had spent one month with us.
“We were to go to the market together. She collected Opeyemi from me and put him on her back. But as we were on the way, I remembered that I left my phone at home and told her I was going to pick it.
“I told her to wait for me at the bus stop. It was long after when I was called that something terrible had happened. I got to the place and saw the bodies of my son and my mother.”
Information gathered that the victims’ family members were only interested in burying both victims in their hometown in Ekiti State.
A police source, however, assured that the police would intensify investigation to apprehend the suspects.
He said, “We will get the culprits.
“Nobody can do this kind of thing and go scot-free. The blood of the innocent child will hunt them. They will have no rest.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said he would call back.
But he had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

End Time!!! Same sex marriage declared legal in all 50 states of America

In a landmark opinion, the Supreme Court ruled Friday that states cannot ban same-sex marriage, establishing a new civil right and handing gay rights advocates a victory that until very recently would have seemed unthinkable.
The 5-4 ruling had Justice Anthony Kennedy writing for the majority with the four liberal justices. Each of the four conservative justices wrote their own dissent.
The far-reaching decision settles one of the major civil rights fights of this era — one that has rapidly evolved in the minds of the American pubic and its leaders, including President Barack Obama. He struggled publicly with the issue and ultimately embraced same-sex marriage in the months before his 2012 re-election.
“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family,” Kennedy wrote. “In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were.”
In a dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia blasted the Court’s “threat to American democracy.”
“The substance of today’s decree is not of immense personal importance to me,” he wrote. “But what really astounds is the hubris reflected in today’s judicial Putsch.”
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the decision had “nothing to do with the Constitution.
“If you are among the many Americans—of whatever sexual orientation—who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision. Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal,” he wrote. “Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.”
The U.S. is now the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. Married same-sex couples will now enjoy the same legal rights and benefits as married heterosexual couples nationwide and will be recognized on official documents such as birth and death certificates.
The decision affirmed growing public support in the U.S. for gay marriage, with about two-thirds of Americans now in favor. And it comes as gay rights groups have seen gay marriage bans fall rapidly in recent years, with the number of states allowing gay marriage swelling most recently to 37 — that is, until this ruling.
There were two questions before the Court, the first asked whether states could ban same sex marriage, the second asked whether states had to recognize lawful marriages performed out of state.
The relevant cases were argued earlier this year. Attorney John Bursch, serving as Michigan’s Special Assistant Attorney General, defended four states’ bans on gay marriage before the Court, arguing that the case was not about how to define marriage, but rather about who gets to decide the question.
The case came before the Supreme Court after several lower courts overturned state bans on gay marriage. A federal appeals court had previously ruled in favor of the state bans, with Judge Jeffrey Sutton of the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals writing a majority opinion in line with the rationale that the issue should be decided through the political process, not the courts.
Fourteen couples and two widowers challenged the bans. Attorneys Mary Bonauto and Doug Hallward-Driemeier presented their case before the Court, arguing that the freedom to marry is a fundamental right for all people and should not be left to popular vote.

Maradona is planning to replace Sepp Blatter as Fifa President

Diego Maradona is planning to replace Sepp Blatter as president of Fifa, according to his close friend Victor Hugo Morales.The legendary former Argentina footballer campaigned on behalf of Prince Ali bin al-Hussein during May’s presidential election, which Blatter comfortably won.
However, a few days later Blatter unexpectedly quit amid increasing pressure on his job following 14 people being indicted over Fifa-related issues including several members of the world football governing body.
Prince Ali is among the early front runners to replace Blatter, having convinced 73 football associations to support him in the first round of voting, and Maradona had previously suggested he could be the Jordanian’s vice-president under the new-look Fifa.
But Uruguayan journalist Morales – who worked with Maradona during last year’s World Cup as co-host of a TV show – has revealed the former Argentina head coach has his eye on running Fifa himself.
“He told me he was going to run for president of Fifa and authorised me to inform people,” Morales wrote on Twitter.
“‘I am a candidate’ were the four words Diego Maradona used to answer me when I consulted him about the nomination for the presidency of Fifa.”
A Fifa with Maradona in charge would certainly make for an interesting outcome if his topsy-turvy career to date is anything to go by.
Considered by many to be the best player to have ever graced a football pitch, Maradona is a World Cup-winner who starred for the likes of Barcelona and Napoli during his playing days.
However, he spent decades dealing with a cocaine addiction and was banished from World Cup 1994 in disgrace after testing positive for doping, while his ‘Hand of God’ goal is one of the most infamous in history.
Although the last decade has been comparatively tame – with his stint in charge of Argentina during the 2010 World Cup arguably the highlight – he does still occasionally hit the headlines for the wrong reasons.
For instance, in April he was filmed taking a swipe at a steward and smashing a camera phone out of a reporter’s hand as he stormed about the pitch in the aftermath of a charity match.

Vatican under fire from Israel over deal with Palestine

The Vatican has come under fire from Israel after signing a historic first accord with Palestine that called for “courageous decisions” to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The historic accord signed on Friday covers the activities of the Church in the parts of the Holy Land under Palestinian control, is the first agreement since the Vatican recognised Palestine as a state in February 2013 and drew immediate response from Israel. “This hasty step damages the prospects for advancing a peace agreement, and harms the international effort to convince the Palestinian Authority to return to direct negotiations with Israel,” Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said.
The product of 15 years of discussions, the agreement between Palestine and the Vatican was finalised in principle last month despite Israel’s opposition to both the symbolism of Palestine signing international accords and the specific content of the agreement.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Al-Malki said at Friday’s signing ceremony that it would “not have been possible without the blessing of his Holiness Pope Francis for our efforts to reach it”.
The minister said the “historic” accord enshrined Palestine’s special status as the birthplace of Christianity and the cradle of the monotheistic religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism).
Paul Gallagher, the British archbishop who is the Vatican’s de facto foreign minister, signed the accord on behalf of the Holy See in the presence of guests including Vera Baboun, the mayor of Bethlehem, the Palestinian town considered to be the birthplace of Jesus.
Ending the conflict
Gallagher said the accord’s provisions to ensure the rights of Christians should serve as a model for other Arab and Muslim states in their relations with Christian minorities facing increasing persecution in the Middle East.
He said it was “indicative of the progress made by the Palestinian Authority in recent years, and above all of the level of international support (for recognition)”.
“In this context, it is my hope that the present agreement may in some way be a stimulus to bringing a definitive end to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which continues to cause suffering for both Parties.
“I also hope that the much desired two-State solution may become a reality as soon as possible. The peace process can move forward only if it is directly negotiated between the parties, with the support of the international community,” Gallagher said.
“This certainly requires courageous decisions, but it will also offer a major contribution to peace and stability in the region.”The Palestinian Authority considers the Vatican one of 136 states to have recognised Palestine’s sovereign status.
The Vatican has had diplomatic relations with Israel since 1993 but has yet to conclude an accord on the Church’s rights in the Jewish state which has been under discussion since 1999, with issues related to the status of Jerusalem proving hard to overcome.
Nahshon said the Vatican-Palestinian accord contained “one sided texts” which “ignore the historic rights of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel and to the places holy to Judaism in Jerusalem”.
He added: “Israel will study the agreement in detail, and its implications for future cooperation between Israel and the Vatican.”

File handling in PHP

Reading data

To simply get the contents of a file and store it as a string, use the file_get_contents function.
echo file_get_contents('hello.txt');
This code will simply output the contents of the file. Alternatively you can get the contents of a file line by line in an array using the file function.
foreach(file('hello.txt') as $text)
   echo $text.'<br />';
The lines of the file are returned as an array and this code outputs each line.

Writing data

To write data to a file you have to open the file, and then use the fwrite function to write data to the file. The fopen function accepts two arguments, a file pointer and a method of opening the file, the various methods are outlined below.
Parameter code
Read only from beginning of file r
Read and write from beginning of file r+
Write only (overwrite)* w
Read and write (overwrite)* w+
Write only (append)* a
Read and write (append)* a+
Create and open a file for writing (if the file exists false will be returned)* x
Create and open a file for reading and writing (if the file exists false will be returned)* x+
* If the file does not exist then one will be created.
$open = fopen('hello.txt','w+');
$text = 'Hello';
fwrite($open, $text);
This example opens a file and overwrites the contents with a string. An alternative is to use file_put_contents.
file_put_contents('hello.txt', 'my string');
This writes the data to the file specified (and creates the file if it does not exist). This function automatically overwrites data but can be set to append data.
file_put_contents('hello.txt', 'my string', FILE_APPEND);

File functions

PHP has a variety of methods for working with files. The examples below demonstrate simple uses of them.
These functions return the size of the file specified and the type of the file (dir, file etc).
These functions check whether a file is readable, writable or exists respectively.
rename($oldFile, $newFile);
This set of functions can copy a file, rename a file or delete a file respectively.

Sessions in PHP

NB: When you use sessions the code session_start(); must be put at the start of every page.
To create a session in PHP you simply assign a (key, value) pair to the $_SESSION array.
$_SESSION[$name] = $value;
To read a value from a session you use the $_SESSION array.
if ($_SESSION[$name] == $value)
   echo 'You are logged in.';
   echo 'You are not logged in.';
This example checks to see if a session has a certain value and prints a message depending on whether the session has the correct value.
setcookie($name, '', time()-100000);
To delete a session you firstly need to delete the associated cookie (the cookie has the same name as the session) and then delete the entry in the array.
The code above deletes all sessions that are active.

Cookies in PHP

To create a cookies use the PHP setcookie function.
setcookie ($name, $value, time() + 86400);
This function has many arguments and only a subset are shown here (for a full list read the PHP manual). The first argument is the name of the cookie, then the value assigned to that cookie and finally the time for which the cookie will be active.
NB: Cookies must be set before the headers of the page are sent, i.e. cookies must be the first thing set in a document (must come before the HTML tag).
if($_COOKIE[$name] == $value)
   echo 'Cookies enabled';
To access the value of a cookie you can use the $_COOKIE global array. This maps the name of each cookie to its value.
setcookie ($name, '', time() - 86400);
To delete a cookie you need to set the time to a date in the past to invalidate the cookie.

Date and time in PHP

The date function

PHP has a very useful date function that can read in a Unix timestamp and output the date as a formatted string of your choice.
date(format [, optional Unix timestamp])
The timestamp is optional, if it is left out it will default to the current time.

Unix time stamps

An easy way to create Unix timestamps for use with the date function is to use mktime.
mktime([optional hour, minute, second, month, day, year])
All parameters in mktime are optional (from left to right i.e. if you want to specify a day then you have to specify a month), if they are left out they will default to the current date and time.

Date format string

Below are a list of common strings for the date function.
Format character Description
a am – pm
d Day of the month – (01 – 31) – leading zeros
D Day of the week – 3 letters e.g. Mon
F Month of the year – full – e.g. January
g 12 hour format – (1 – 12 )
G 24 hour format – (0 – 23)
h 12 hour format – (01 – 12 ) – leading zeros
H 24 hour format – (00 – 23) – leading zeros
i Minutes – (00 – 59) – leading zeros
j Day of the month – (1 – 31) – no leading zeros
l Day of the week – Full – e.g. Monday
L Leap year – (1=leap year)
m Month of the year – numerical – (01 – 12) – leading zeros
M Month of the year – 3 letters – e.g. Jan
n Month of the year – numerical – (1 – 12)
O Difference to Greenwich mean time e.g. +0200
s Seconds with leading zeros – (00-59)
S Suffix of day of the month – e.g. st, nd, rd, th
t Number of days in the month
T Time zone
w Numerical day of the week – (0 = Sunday, 1 = Monday)
W Week of the year
Y Year – full – 2005
y Year – 2 numbers – 05
z Day of year
For the full list see the PHP website.

Below are a list of example uses of the date function.
date('J MS Y');
//outputs the current date in the format: 1st Jan 2010
date('J MS Y', mktime(0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 2000));
//outputs 1st Jan 2000

PHP 5 DateTime object

As of PHP 5.2 you can create an object that represents the date and time.
$date = new DateTime('2011-01-31');
$datetime = new DateTime('2011-01-31 12:01:01');

Formatting the date

To format the date you use the same constants as before, but call the format method of the DateTime object.
$date = new DateTime('2011-01-31');
echo $date->format('j/n/Y');
//Outputs 31/1/2011

Simple PHP forum

This tutorial shows the techniques required to make a simple PHP forum. It consists of four pages, one for displaying the forums, one for the topics, one for the replies and finally a page to post new topcis / replies.

Below are the database tables that are required for this code.
CREATE TABLE  `main` (
  `id` int(11) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `name` text NOT NULL,
  `lastposter` varchar(200) NOT NULL,
  `lastpostdate` int(11) NOT NULL,
  `topics` int(11) NOT NULL default '0',
  `replies` int(11) NOT NULL default '0',
  PRIMARY KEY  (`id`)

CREATE TABLE `replies` (
  `id` int(11) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `topicid` int(11) unsigned,
  `message` text NOT NULL,
  `subject` text NOT NULL,
  `poster` text NOT NULL,
  `date` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY  (`id`)

CREATE TABLE  `topics` (
  `id` int(11) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `forumid` int(11) unsigned,
  `message` text NOT NULL,
  `subject` text NOT NULL,
  `poster` text NOT NULL,
  `date` int(11) NOT NULL,
  `lastposter` varchar(200) NOT NULL,
  `lastpostdate` int(11) NOT NULL,
  `replies` int(11) unsigned NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY  (`id`)

Displaying the forum list

This simple forum will consist of three elements. The first will be a list of forums, then each forum will have a list of topics and finally each topic will have a number of replies. We firstly need to set up the list of forums, these can be manually added to the database.
$query1 = mysql_query('SELECT * FROM main ORDER BY id DESC');
This code connects to the database and selects the forums. We now need to display the information.
while ($output1 = mysql_fetch_assoc($query1))
This loop will get all the rows from the database and the loop will end when there are no rows left. Below is an example of getting the information from the database and printing it to the document. Note the link is to topics.php.
echo '<td><a href="topics.php?id='.$output1['id'].'">'.$output1['name'].'</a></td>';

Displaying topics

Now that the basic forums are set up we can list the topics for each one. The link from the main page sets an id variable that we can use to select the appropriate topics.
$id = (int) $_GET['id'];
if ($id < 1)
	header('Location: forum.php');
We start output buffering (ob_start()) to ensure that no headers are sent because if the topic id given is less than one, we will redirect the user to the main forum page.
$output1 = mysql_fetch_assoc(mysql_query("SELECT name FROM main WHERE id = $id"));
echo $output1['name'];
Now that we have a topic id we can get all the topics that match that it. We firstly get the forum name associated with the id and print it out.
$query2 = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM topics WHERE forumid = '$id' ORDER BY id DESC");
$query3 = mysql_num_rows($query2);
Within the database table design for the topics there is a foreign key (called forumid) which links each topic to the id of the forum. Above the number of topics for the given forum is found. If there are no topics a message is displayed, otherwise the topics are printed out.
if ($query3 == 0)
	echo '<td colspan="5">No Topics</td>';
If there are no topics for this forum then we will inform the user. Otherwise a table is built with links to the replies for each topic. Note the link to replies.php. We will use mysql_fetch_assoc because we will refer to the fields in the array by name rather then by number.
while ($output2 = mysql_fetch_assoc($query2))
    echo '<td><a href="replies.php?id='.$output2['id'].'">'.$output2['subject'].'</a></td>';
	echo '<td colspan="2">No replies</td>';
else {
    echo '<td>'.$output2['lastposter'].' @ '.date('d-m-y G:i', $output2['lastpostdate']).'</td>';
    echo '<td>'.$output2['replies'].'</td>';
We will keep track of the last poster for each forum and topic. If there are no posts a message is displayed otherwise the name and date of the last post is printed.
<form name="form1" id="form1" method="post" action="forumpost.php?type=topics&id=<? echo $id; ?>">
Finally on this page is the form that the user can use to post a new topic. It sends two pieces of information to the forum post page, the id of the topic and the type of post (in this case ‘topic’).

Displaying replies

This page is very similar to the topics page. It gets an id as an input which it uses to get all the replies. Each reply has a foreign key (topicid) which links to a particular topic and this is used to get all the relevant replies.
<form name="form1" id="form1" method="post" action="forumpost.php?type=replies&id=<? echo $id; ?>">
The form to post a reply is also very similar to the topics page, but the type is now set to ‘replies’ as this form can only post new replies for each topic.

Posting replies

Now that we have have set up the pages for the forum, topics and replies we need a page that will insert the new topics and replies into the database.
$id = (int) $_GET['id'];
$type = $_GET['type'];
if ($id < 1 || ($type != 'replies' && $type != 'topics'))
	header('Location: forum.php');
This code checks that the id is greater than one and that the type given is one of the two constants that we defined (topics or replies).
function clear($message)
		$message = addslashes($message);
	$message = strip_tags($message);
	$message = htmlentities($message);
	return trim($message);
We now define a function to check the user input for any HTML tags, and remove any quotes, so that the information can be put into the database.
if($type == 'topics')
	$query = mysql_fetch_assoc(mysql_query("SELECT topics FROM main WHERE id = '$id'"));
	$topics = $query['topics'] + 1;
	mysql_query("UPDATE main SET topics = '$topics', lastposter = '$poster',
              lastpostdate = '$date' WHERE id = '$id'");
	mysql_query("INSERT INTO topics (id , forumid , message , subject, poster,
              date, lastposter, lastpostdate, replies)
              VALUES ('', '$id', '$message', '$subject','$poster', '$date', '', '', '0')");
	echo 'Topic Posted.<a href="topics.php?id='.$id.'">View Topic</a>';
If the type of post is a topic then we need to update multiple rows in the database. We firstly need to update the topics field of the forum to add one to the number of topics. We do this by using the id input to get the forum and the current number of topics. The topic count is incremented and the forum is updated (the current poster is also added as the latest poster and the last post date is updated). Finally the topic is added to the database.
	$query = mysql_fetch_assoc(mysql_query("SELECT replies, forumid FROM topics WHERE id = '$id'"));
	$replies = $query['replies'] + 1;
	$id2 =  $query['forumid'];
	mysql_query("UPDATE topics SET replies = '$replies', lastposter = '$poster',
              lastpostdate = '$date' WHERE id = '$id'");
	$query = mysql_fetch_array(mysql_query("SELECT replies FROM main WHERE id = '$id2'"));
	$replies = $query['replies'] + 1;
	mysql_query("UPDATE main SET replies = '$replies', lastposter = '$poster',
              lastpostdate = '$date' WHERE id = '$id2'");
	mysql_query("INSERT INTO replies (id , topicid, message, subject, poster, date)
              VALUES ('', '$id', '$message', '$subject','$poster', '$date')");
	echo 'Reply Posted.<a href="replies.php?id='.$id.'">View Reply</a>';
If the type of post is a reply then we need to do a similar database update but this time we need to add one to the number of replies. Using the id input we get the number of replies and the forum id from the related topic. We then update the number of replies and update the last poster and last post date fields to the current poster. Using the forum id we then also update the forum so that the last poster / last post date is updated and a total number of replies is kept. Finally the reply is added to the database.

MySQL news system

Below is the database table for this code.
   `id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment,
   `postedby` varchar(200) NOT NULL,
   `news` text NOT NULL,
   `subject` varchar(200) NOT NULL,
   `date` int(11) NOT NULL,
   PRIMARY KEY  (`id`)

Posting news

We will firstly create the page that will post our news.
<form method="post" action="#">
   Posted By:<br /><input name="postedby" id="postedby" type="Text" size="50" maxlength="50"><br />
   Subject:<br /><input name="subject" id="subject" type="Text" size="50" maxlength="50"><br />
   <textarea name="news" id="news" cols="50" rows="5"></textarea><br />
   <input type="Submit" name="submit" id="submit" value="Enter News">
This form has 3 fields, a subject field, a message field and finally an author field.
function clear($message)
      $message = addslashes($message);
   $message = strip_tags($message);
   $message = htmlentities($message);
   return trim($message);
The clear function checks that the input is ready for entering into the database.
if ($_POST['submit'])
   if (empty($_POST['postedby']))
      die('Enter a name.');
   else if (empty($_POST['subject']))
      die('Enter a subject.');
   else if (empty($_POST['news']))
      die('Enter an article.');
These first set of checks ensure that no empty data is added to the database.
$postedby = clear($_POST['postedby']);
$subject = clear($_POST['subject']);
$news = clear($_POST['news']);
$date = mktime();
if(mysql_query("INSERT INTO news (id , postedby , news , subject , date) VALUES
              ('', '$postedby', '$news', '$subject', '$date')"))
   echo 'News Entered.';
Finally the data is added to the database.

Editing the news

To edit the news we need to display the form again with the current data to allow the user to change the data.
   $query = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM news ORDER BY id DESC");
   echo 'Edit<hr />';
   while($output = mysql_fetch_assoc($query))
      echo $output['subject'].' &raquo; <a href="?id='.$output['id'].'">Edit</a><br />';
If the user has not selected a news item to edit we will display a list of the current news items with a link to edit that news item.
if ($_POST['submit'])
   $postedby = clear($_POST['postedby']);
   $subject = clear($_POST['subject']);
   $news = clear($_POST['news']);
   $date = mktime();
   $id = $_GET['id'];
   mysql_query("UPDATE news SET postedby='$postedby', news='$news', subject='$subject', date='$date' WHERE id='$id'");
   echo 'News Edited.';
Now that we have an id for the news item we check if the submit button has been pressed, if it has we enter the new data into the database.
   $id = $_GET['id'];
   $query = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM news WHERE id='$id'");
   $output = mysql_fetch_assoc($query);
If the submit button has not been pressed we get the data from the database. We now need to display it in a form.
<form method="post" action="?id=<? echo $output['id']; ?>">
   Editing <? echo $output['subject']; ?><hr />
   Posted By:<input name="postedby" id="postedby" type="Text" size="50" maxlength="50" value="<? echo $output['postedby']; ?>">
<br />
   Subject:<input name="subject" id="subject" type="Text" size="50" maxlength="50" value="<? echo $output['subject']; ?>">
<br />
   News:<textarea name="news" cols="50" rows="5"><? echo $output['news']; ?></textarea><br />
   <input type="Submit" name="submit" value="Enter information">
The form gets its data from the variable $output that has data from the database.

Deleting news

To delete the news we need the id of the news item in the database.
<script type="text/javascript">
function check(id){
   if (confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this news item?"))
   this.location.href = "?id="+id;
This code prompts the user, asking them if they want to delete the news item. If so then the id of the news item is passed to the PHP script.

   $query = mysql_query('SELECT * FROM news ORDER BY id DESC');
   while($output = mysql_fetch_assoc($query))
      echo $output['subject'].' &raquo; <a href="#" onclick="check('.$output['id'].'); return false;">Delete</a><br />';
If the id has not been passed to the script we will display a list of the news item subjects with links to allow the user to delete them.
   $id = $_GET['id'];
   mysql_query("DELETE FROM news WHERE id = $id LIMIT 1");
   echo 'News Deleted.';
If the id has been given then we delete it from the database.

Displaying news

Finally we will display the news.
$query = mysql_query('SELECT * FROM news ORDER BY id DESC');
while($output = mysql_fetch_assoc($query))
   echo $output['subject'].'<br />';
   echo $output['news'].'<br / >';
   echo date('D-M-Y', $output['date']).'<br / >';
   echo 'Posted by '.$output['postedby'];
   echo '<hr />';
This code simply gets each row from the database and displays it to the user.
